IPL with SHR and RF

Due to demand, we opted to invest in an IPL machine with painless hair reduction technology and for added benefit Radio Frequency. We have tested various machines and found the perfect one. It is capable of much more than simply hair reduction.

Important Notice

  • If it is your first IPL treatment with us, unfortunately due to legislation changes a patch test is required prior to your IPL/SHR treatment. The patch test can be performed on the day of your treatment. (Preference is one day before if possible). Please select the IPL patch test option on the online bookings page as well as the required treatment to allow sufficient time for your patch test and to fill in all documentation.
  • Area of treatment should be thoroughly cleaned and properly shaved before your treatment.
  • Please be advised that there is an extra in clinic charge of $60 to shave and prepare areas to be treated.

What is SHR?

SHR (Super Hair Removal) is a step forward in permanent hair reduction technology using intense pulsed light. It is the most advanced way of removing unwanted hair today. SHR is faster than traditional IPL and Laser, safer and it is pain free in comparison.

SHR vs IPL?

IPL is an acronym for Intense Pulse Light. This is a technology where intense broad spectrum non coherent light is emitted at a pre-set energy level (energy measured in Joules) and wavelength (measured in nano meters), at a varying number of pulses over time (frequency measured in Hertz).

  • Higher pain index
  • Momentarily up to 70 Degrees Celsius
  • Slower
  • Spot treatment
  • Smaller area
  • Limited skin Fitzpatrick scale treatable

SHR is an acronym from Super Hair Removal.  SHR share the same base method of operation in that it is IPL at vastly different energy and frequency levels.

  • Very low pain index
  • Momentarily around 48 Degrees Celsius
  • Faster
  • Continuous flowing motion
  • Larger area
  • Broadest skin Fitzpatrick scale treatable

How does SHR work?

Rather than bombarding your skin with high energy  (Joules ) pulses of light at a much slower rate, SHR fires multiple low energy pulses at a much higher frequency. In doing so SHR gently heats the hair follicle to the heat needed, and the most you will feel is warmth and a tingling sensation. Some clients comparing it to a warm massage. SHR also utilizes In-Motion technology, where the hand piece is always in motion over the skin allowing the treatment of a much larger area in a shorter time.

To start with your therapist will assess you for suitability and to determine the level of treatment we can offer you. We will customize the treatment to suit your skin type, the condition of your skin, hair color, location of hair and take into account medication you are taking that could affect your skin as far as practicable. You will be asked to shave the area before treatment. The area will be treated and you can expect to find a large percentage of hair fall out over the period of 2 weeks.

How much does SHR hurt?

On a pain index scale from 0 to 10, where 10 is excruciating pain and 0 is no pain at all, we rated SHR to about a 1. Sometimes even a pleasant warming feeling similar to that of a massage. It depends on the area being treated and how strong the hair growth is as well. What is pain free on your arm can be a different experience somewhere else, but rest assured, it is still by far less painful than waxing or full blown IPL and Laser. On a comfort level this is not classified as a relaxing treatment on account of the bright pulses of light, but then again compared to waxing this treatment is still even more comfortable.

How does the pain index compare between Waxing, Laser, IPL and SHR?

From less painful to most painful on a scale from 0 to 10:

  • 0 to 2 - SHR
  • 2 to 5 - IPL
  • 5 and up - Laser and Waxing

Is it PERMANENT hair removal?

There is unfortunately no such thing as permanent hair removal. No technology can guarantee you permanent hair removal, and that includes laser, IPL and SHR. SHR/IPL and laser offer permanent hair reduction. You should see a marked improvement after the course of treatments recommended by you therapist. Little to almost no hair growth in properly treated areas are common.

How many treatment would I need?

It  will depend on the maximum safe and comfortable level of energy we can apply to your skin. Certain prescription medicines, sun exposure ans skin type adversely affect the outcome.  Until now hair had to be treated during the growing phase (20%-30%) however in the telogen phase stem cells are in a resting phase but can still successfully be treated with SHR. Generally speaking, since growth cycles vary, approx. 8 treatments are usually necessary.

How long should the intervals between treatment be?

Hair growth cycle is approximately between 6-8 weeks and should correspond to your next treatment for optimum results. You can come in earlier or later if prescribed by your therapist.

How much time is needed for a treatment?

It will depend on the area to be treated. We are in progress of preparing a list detailing the time required. For a standard bikini 15 minutes, g-string 15 minutes, Brazilian 25 minutes, whole face 40 minutes, full back 50 minutes. We will provide more information soon, please watch this space, or speak to your therapist.

Which areas can be treated?

Hair can be removed on any part of the body.

How are lighter and darker skin and hair color affected?

The darker the color the better light absorbs it, therefore light skin with dark hair responds most favorably to the treatments . In addition to targeting the melanin, SHR-technology affects the chromphore, a protein located in the follicle that is responsible for its color, enabling the successful treatment of dark skin removing achromous and blond fine hairs. SHR is not as limited as IPL and Laser in that is can also perform hair reduction to darker skin types.

What is RF?

RF is an acronym for Radio Frequency.  RF skin tightening is a non-invasive anti-ageing technology. It is a non-surgical face lift treatment that introduces radio frequency (RF) energy to the skin, creating measurable electrical currents that reshape and contract the skin’s collagen and then tighten the surface of the skin. Radio Frequency skin tightening requires no cutting or re-positioning of the skin, as is necessary during a traditional eye or face lift, and has significantly fewer side effects than older laser skin therapies. Much like laser treatment, RF energy penetrates both the epidermis and the dermis to tighten and rejuvenate the skin, but it causes no damage to existing skin cells. It is a gentle treatment suitable to sensitive skin that targets fine line s and wrinkles.

How does RF provide a non-surgical face lift?

Non destructive RF waves penetrate the dermis and epidermis of the skin creating heat that stimulating collagen fibroblast production. Collagen fibroblast production trigger the production of fresh collagen fibers which result in tighter younger looking skin.

Is RF a separate treatment?

The machine has built in RF and can be used with the SHR function at will. The usage of this function will be determined during your assessment and can be reviewed during your SHR treatment. If we feel you will benefit from the RF we will certainly provide you that option. We also have dedicated RF equipment should you wish to benefit from this amazing technology now.
